2. Trend signal — why now?
Roughly 70% of what a typical funeral home collects comes in as insurance assignments — the family signs over a life-insurance policy to pay the bill instead of paying cash. That receivable is the funeral home’s biggest cash-flow headache. Insurers take 1–5 weeks (3 weeks is “normal,” 6–8 weeks is common), every carrier wants a different claimant statement, and a director “spends hours on the phone each week” chasing assignments.
The industry’s answer for 30 years has been assignment funding companies — C&J Financial, Express Funeral Funding, ClaimCheck, Trinity, American Funeral Financial — that advance cash in 24–48 hours and handle the paperwork, in exchange for factoring the death benefit at ~3.8%–3.98%. C&J alone has processed over 100,000 death claims. That fee is a permanent margin leak: on a $10,000 policy it’s ~$400 per case, taken out of the funeral home’s proceeds, forever.
What changed in the last 12 months: AI document-assembly and carrier-form-matching got cheap and reliable enough to do the one thing that made funding companies indispensable — knowing and pre-filling each carrier’s exact claim form from a library of hundreds. Passare, the leading funeral CRM, just shipped a ClaimCheck integration that “pulls and pre-fills forms” — but it still hands the claim to a funding company that takes the cut. Nobody offers funeral homes a self-service path to file the claim themselves and keep the whole benefit.

3. The opportunity
The funding companies sell two things bundled together: (a) a 24-hour cash advance and (b) the paperwork chase. Funeral homes pay ~4% of the benefit for the bundle — but most of them only need (a) on a fraction of cases. A reasonably capitalized funeral home that does 8–15 assigned cases a month doesn’t need a cash advance on every single one; it needs the paperwork to stop eating its staff’s week.
AssureFile unbundles them. We do (b) — the paperwork chase — as software, for a flat monthly fee, and let the funeral home keep the full death benefit by filing directly with the carrier. The trade is honest: the home waits the carrier’s normal 1–3 weeks instead of getting 24-hour funding. For the cases where they can wait (and 70%+ of their revenue runs through this channel, so there are plenty), they stop bleeding ~$400 per case.
The incumbent’s weakness is structural: their entire business model is the 4% factor. They will not cannibalize it by selling self-service software that lets homes keep the benefit. That’s the wedge.
4. Target market

The sweet spot is the home that processes a meaningful volume of assignments but isn’t so cash-starved that it must factor every case.
- Why they buy: In their words — assignments are “a direct attack on cashflow,” staff “spend hours on the phone,” and “most insurance companies require over a month even when they tell you it’ll only be ten days.” They resent paying 4% to a funding company on cases where they could have waited.
- Rough TAM reasoning: ~19,000 homes. If a third are good-fit (decent volume, not chronically cash-starved) ≈ 6,000 targetable. At $300–500/mo that’s a $20M–$36M ceiling on subscription alone — a healthy sub-$5M ARR niche with room.

6. AI angle — what’s load-bearing
The load-bearing AI work is carrier identification + form-matching + field extraction. The reason funding companies are indispensable is they maintain a library of hundreds of carrier-specific claimant statements and know which boxes each carrier rejects claims over. An LLM + vision model now reads a policy doc, identifies the carrier and product, selects the correct current form, extracts and maps fields from the death certificate and case file, and pre-flights the packet for the exact mismatches that cause kickbacks. Remove the AI and you’re back to a human flipping through a binder of forms and re-keying data — which is precisely the manual labor the whole industry pays 4% to avoid. The chase agent (status-aware follow-up drafting) is a second, lighter AI layer.
7. Localization angle (if any)
N/A — this is a US-only play. The wedge is a US-specific structure: the FTC-regulated funeral industry, the US assignment-funding market, and the US life-insurance carrier form maze. The form library is the moat and it’s inherently US-carrier-specific. A UK/India version would need a completely different document corpus and doesn’t have the same assignment-funding incumbent to undercut.
8. Business model — path to $1M–$5M ARR

- Go where they already gather. NFDA and state association conventions, and the small but active funeral-director Facebook groups and LinkedIn circles. A booth + a live “watch us file a MetLife claim in 4 minutes” demo sells itself to people who know the binder pain.
- Partner against the incumbent. The funeral CRMs (CRaKN, Osiris, smaller players) that don’t own a funding arm have an incentive to integrate a “keep your benefit” filing tool as a differentiator against Passare/ClaimCheck. Co-sell into their installed base.
- Reference selling. This industry runs on word of mouth and multi-generational trust. The first 10 homes that recover real margin become the case studies; one credible testimonial at a state convention moves a dozen.
10. Build complexity — justification
Medium. The tech stack is off-the-shelf: vision/LLM extraction, a document-assembly pipeline, a tracking dashboard, and a follow-up scheduler. The real work — and the reason it’s Medium not Low — is building and maintaining the carrier-form library and the per-carrier rejection rules. That’s domain grind (sourcing forms, encoding each carrier’s quirks, keeping them current), not novel engineering.
