Three unrelated curves collided in the last twelve months and the indie vinyl seller is sitting in the intersection.

Vinyl is no longer a “comeback” — it’s a $1.8B retail channel. Luminate, ERA, and Statista all confirm: vinyl sales hit $1.8B in 2026, indie record stores account for ~40% of US vinyl LP sales, and UK indie record-shop count hit a 10-year high (461 shops, +36% over 2013). Record Store Day 2026 was the biggest in the event’s 19-year history with UK sales up 25% YoY. Rough Trade publicly forecast its busiest-ever Q4. This isn’t a niche — it’s a real, growing retail vertical.

The listing workflow is still 1998. Discogs hosts ~$275M GMV/year on a 100% third-party marketplace with 47M items live and 2M new releases catalogued per week. The seller’s job: photograph each record front+back+labels+matrix, hunt through ~1,000 entries (the White Album has that many) to find the exact pressing, copy in dead-wax matrix codes, grade vinyl + sleeve, set price by skimming live listings, then re-do most of it on eBay/Shopify/Bandcamp. Forum threads from people inheriting collections of 3,000–4,000 records (“I want to sell my collection but…”) routinely conclude the math doesn’t work. Existing helpers — Disconnect ($630/yr), Cratebase (€79–€219/mo), Common Ground — are sync/order-management tools. None create the listing.

Vision LLMs crossed the pressing-identification threshold. PriceSnap and VinylAI claim 94–98.7% accuracy identifying pressings from a clear label/matrix photo — but they’re built for collectors valuing their own records, not sellers creating salable listings. Off-the-shelf GPT-4o/Claude vision plus the public Discogs catalog dump can now match a phone-camera shot of a label + dead-wax to a specific Discogs release_id with high confidence. Twelve months ago this was a research project; today it’s a $0.005/image API call.

3. The opportunity

Discogs is the incumbent and Discogs is the bottleneck. The platform owns 47M live listings and the canonical catalog, but the listing-creation flow inside Discogs (and inside its CSV bulk-upload path) is the same workflow it had a decade ago: pick a release from a thousand near-duplicates, type matrix codes, type grades, type prices, photograph each record on a separate device, upload one by one. Multi-channel is worse — the existing tools (Disconnect, Cratebase) sync after a listing exists; nobody helps the seller turn a stack of records into listings.

Discogs themselves won’t build this any time soon. Their incentive is to keep sellers on Discogs, not to mirror listings onto rival channels. They’ve spent the last two years on inventory-management UI tweaks, not vision-AI. The category is too tactical for a16z and too unsexy for YC, which is exactly why a small operator can win it.

Without these three, the product collapses. With them, it’s a 10× workflow.

7. Localization angle (if any)

N/A — this is a global play. Indie vinyl is dense in US, UK, Germany, Japan, Australia, France, Netherlands. Discogs is in English natively but the catalog is fully multilingual. Multi-channel mirrors (Shopify/eBay/Bandcamp) all global. Pricing in $/£/€ at parity.
