The data dropped in January 2026 and it’s brutal. The PetSmart Charities–Gallup State of Pet Care study found 94% of veterinarians say client finances limit the care they can provide — cost is cited as a reason pet owners decline treatment more than twice as often as any other factor. The kicker: 73% of pet parents who declined care due to cost said they were never offered a more affordable option, while 81% of vets believe they always offer one. That perception gap is the whole business.

Why the gap exists is also documented: 48% of vets say their education didn’t prepare them at all to discuss financial barriers, and another 32% say they were minimally prepared. The financial conversation is an untrained, improvised, emotionally loaded moment — and it’s happening dozens of times a day in every clinic. 41% of vets report economic euthanasia happens at least sometimes in their practice; 74% call it one of the hardest parts of the job.

Meanwhile the rails to fix it finally commoditized. The missing piece isn’t the money rails. It’s the 90 seconds at the front desk where someone has to turn a scary $1,800 line-item estimate into “here are three ways your dog still gets treated, and here’s what each costs you per month.” Nobody automates that moment.

3. The opportunity

The incumbents own the wrong half of the problem. Trupanion solved direct-pay for the ~4% of pets that are insured. Financing lenders (CareCredit, Scratchpay, Cherry, Sunbit) own the capital — they hand the clinic a sign-up link and a brochure. The PIMS platforms (ezyVet, IDEXX, Cornerstone, Shepherd) own the estimate but treat it as a billing artifact, not a conversation.

Nobody owns the decision moment: the client is standing at the desk, the estimate says $1,800, the tech is improvising, and the clinic is about to lose the case. The “spectrum of care” concept is taught in vet school as a slide; in practice it requires the front desk to (a) re-scope the estimate into good/better/best tiers on the fly, (b) know which financing product this specific client is likely to qualify for, and (c) say it out loud without making it weird. 80% of the staff were never trained to do any of that.

A focused AI tool can do all three in the time it takes to print the estimate — re-tier the care plan, run soft-pull eligibility across the financing stack, and hand the tech a script.
