2. Trend signal — why now?

Pet insurance is the fastest-growing line in companion-animal spend, and the claim mechanics are a mess for everyone except Trupanion. Three things converged in the last 12 months:

  • The market is exploding and so is claim volume. The US pet-insurance market is projected to grow from US$6.19B in 2025 to US$18.94B by 2033 (≈15% CAGR), and NAPHIA’s 2025 State of the Industry confirms continued double-digit growth in insured pets. Policyholders submit an average of 3.07 claims per policy per year — every one of which lands a records request on a clinic’s front desk.
  • One carrier owns the easy path; the rest don’t. Trupanion is the only carrier paying the vet directly at checkout (11,000 clinics, AI-driven 5-second approvals built into ezyVet/IDEXX). Pets Best partially does. The other ~20 carriers — Nationwide, ASPCA, Lemonade, Figo, Embrace, MetLife, Healthy Paws — run reimbursement, where the clinic gets faxed/emailed requests for itemized invoices and line-by-line medical records, per claim. Carriers state it plainly: “If we’re missing something, our claims team will request the information from your vet’s office” — and that delays the client’s money for weeks.
  • 2026 multimodal LLMs can finally read the source docs. A model can now ingest a SOAP note, an itemized PMS invoice, and a carrier’s claim form, then produce a complete, line-mapped submission — the exact task a tech does by hand today between appointments.

Clinics already pay $249–$389/mo for client-comms tools (Weave, PetDesk, Vetstoria) to lift retention and lifetime value. The wallet and the buying motion exist.

3. The opportunity

Trupanion solved the claim for Trupanion — one carrier, one integration, paid at checkout. It has no incentive to handle a Nationwide or a Healthy Paws claim, and it never will. That leaves the structural gap: for ~90% of the insured-pet market, the claim is still a manual records chore the clinic absorbs as unpaid goodwill. A tech pulls the SOAP note, exports an itemized invoice, redacts nothing it shouldn’t, fills the carrier’s form (each carrier wants different fields), and faxes or emails it. When the carrier bounces it for a missing line item or an unreadable note, it comes back — and the client’s reimbursement, and the clinic’s reputation with that client, slips another two weeks.

PawClaim is the carrier-agnostic claim assembler the clinic controls. It sits on top of the practice-management system (PIMS), reads the visit, and produces a clean, carrier-specific submission in one click — for all the carriers Trupanion’s direct-pay doesn’t cover. The 10× isn’t “AI in vet software”; it’s collapsing a 10–15 minute per-claim records-and-form chore into a 30-second review-and-send, and cutting the bounce-back rate that strings clients along.

Remove the AI and this is a fax cover sheet. The load-bearing work is multimodal extraction + mapping: read a free-text SOAP note and a PMS invoice (formats vary by PIMS and by doctor), infer which charges are claimable, map them to this carrier’s line schema, and catch the gaps a human tech misses at 5pm between appointments. The per-carrier field quirks, the “this note doesn’t justify this charge” check, and the bounce-back rework drafting are all model work that a rules engine can’t cover across a dozen carriers and a hundred note styles. That’s the difference between a form-filler and something a clinic pays $300/mo to keep.

N/A — this is a US-first play. The wedge is the US carrier landscape (Trupanion’s direct-pay monopoly + ~20 reimbursement carriers) and US PIMS systems.
