2. Trend signal — why now?
Every COI tool on the market points the wrong way. TrustLayer, myCOI, Jones, Billy, BCS, FileFlo — all of them are built for the general contractor who collects and verifies incoming certificates. Not one is built for the subcontractor standing on the other side of that portal, getting bounced.
And they get bounced constantly. 3. The opportunity
Every dollar in this category is chasing the GC. That’s rational — the GC has budget and a compliance department. But it leaves the person who actually produces the document completely unserved, and that person is the one who bleeds when it’s wrong (lost job, idle crew, held payment).
The disruption isn’t “a better COI tracker.” It’s flipping the telescope. The GC-side tools answer “is this sub’s cert compliant?” after it arrives. ClearFirst answers “will my cert clear this specific GC’s requirements?” before it’s sent — and if not, hands the sub the exact, agent-ready request to fix it in one shot instead of the two-to-three round-trip ping-pong that eats the 1–3 days.

6. AI angle — what’s load-bearing
Load-bearing, not decoration. The hard part is that GC insurance requirements are unstructured free text — every GC writes their exhibit differently, buries requirements in a 40-page subcontract, and references ISO form numbers inconsistently. A document-AI model reading that exhibit and the sub’s ACORD 25 side by side, then producing a structured field-level diff plus the carrier-language remediation, is the entire product. Remove the AI and you’re back to a human insurance expert reading two PDFs — which is exactly the slow, expensive bottleneck we’re replacing. Deterministic parsing can’t handle the free-text variance; that’s why this wasn’t buildable cheaply until recently.

N/A — this is a US play. ACORD 25, ISO endorsement forms (CG 20 10 / CG 20 37), and the GC-subcontractor insurance regime are US-specific. That specificity is a feature: it’s a deep, boring, jargon-heavy domain that a generic global tool can’t touch. Canada is an adjacent expansion (similar CGL/ISO conventions), not a launch market.
