The grower’s payout is literally a function of two numbers the integrator measures and reports: feed-conversion ratio and bird weight at pickup. Suguna’s published growing charge runs roughly ₹5.5–7/kg by FCR band — so a single misread FCR band moves real money on a 5,000-bird shed.

The recurring, documented grievance: “deductions are not clearly explained, leaving farmers with unanswered questions about how their profits were calculated” (poultry.care). The contract broiler grower is the structurally weak party in a billion-bird industry. He supplies the shed, labour, water and electricity; the integrator supplies chicks, feed and the scoreboard. Settlement is “numbers decide settlement, but trust decides the relationship” — and the farmer has no independent copy of the numbers. When the FCR comes back at 1.72 instead of 1.65, or mortality is logged at 6% (penalty band) instead of 4.8%, the grower’s payout drops by thousands of rupees per cycle and he has nothing to argue with except a feeling.

6. AI angle — what’s load-bearing

Two places. First, the settlement-sheet reader — integrators hand out wildly inconsistent paper/printed settlement formats; multimodal extraction turns a phone photo into structured (claimed FCR, mortality, weight, rate) data with no manual typing. Remove it and a low-literacy farmer can’t get his own number out of the integrator’s sheet to compare. Second, voice-first vernacular logging — the daily entry (mortality, feed bags) has to be a 20-second spoken interaction in Telugu/Marathi or the grower won’t keep it up across a 42-day cycle.
