2. Trend signal — why now?

The German tax office’s surprise cash-register inspection (Kassennachschau) went from rare to systematic in 2026, and the small shops most exposed are the least prepared.

  • The clock turned firm. The second amendment to the KassenSichV came into force 1 February 2026, and the full electronic reporting obligation for digital recording systems (every register registered via Mein Elster) completed in 2025. Tax authorities now have the data stream to target risk sectors with unannounced inspections — they no longer fish blind.
  • Half the registers are already failing. The existing tools solve the accountant’s problem, not the shop owner’s problem.

Today’s Verfahrensdokumentation products (smartdocu, dokutar, VD2, EasyDoku) are generic GoBD document generators. They produce a versioned PDF and are sold largely to Steuerberater and to broad businesses. They assume the buyer already knows what a Verfahrensdokumentation is, what DSFinV-K is, and which exports an auditor will demand. The Friseur with three chairs does not know any of that — she learns the word Verfahrensdokumentation for the first time when an inspector is standing at her counter.

What they all do badly:

  • Static, not living. A PDF generated once and never updated. A Kassennachschau wants current documentation reflecting the register you actually use today.
  • No panic-moment mode. Nothing tells the owner, in the 5 minutes the inspector is at the till, “here is the DSFinV-K export, here is the TSE certificate, here is the receipt-sequence proof, here is your signed staff instruction — hand them this.”
  • Not vertical. A salon, an Imbiss, and a tattoo studio have different cash workflows, tip handling, and POS setups. Generic templates leave gaps that are exactly what auditors probe.

An AI-first, vertical, owner-facing product can be 10× more reassuring for the person whose €30,000 is on the line — and that person, not the accountant, feels the fear.
