The failure mode is universal and named. The industry has a word for it — pencil-whipping: signing the checklist without doing the check. Every guide to daily forklift inspection concedes it: “operators rush through inspections just to check the box.” A digital checklist app doesn’t fix this. 3. The opportunity

The whole inspection-software category solved the wrong problem. Whip Around, Fleetio, HVI, and a dozen forklift-checklist apps digitized the form. But the form was never the problem — the problem is that a form (paper or digital) can’t tell whether the operator actually looked at the equipment. A checklist app that a driver clears in 8 seconds of all-green tapping produces a beautiful audit trail of a lie. When an accident happens and OSHA subpoenas the records, “we have digital checklists” is not a defense if the checklists are obviously pencil-whipped.
