2. Trend signal — why now?

The EU Right to Repair Directive (adopted June 2024, in force July 2024) becomes applicable in all 27 member states from 31 July 2026 — eight weeks from now. From that date a brand-new artifact exists: the European Repair Information Form (ERIF), a standardised quote a repairer offers to a consumer, valid 30 days, listing repairer details, work scope, price, and time. Sellers must actively steer consumers toward repair over replacement and extend warranties by 12 months on repair. Independent repairers gain a statutory right to demand spare parts, manuals, and diagnostic software from manufacturers — who must deliver within 5–10 working days for up to 7–10 years.

Underneath that sits an already-live economic engine: France’s Bonus Réparation (Qualirépar). Across 73 product categories, certified repairers knock €15–60 off the customer’s bill at the counter, then file a duplicate invoice to an eco-organization (ecosystem, Ecologic) and get reimbursed within 15 days. France targeted 7,800 approved outlets. The repairer fronts the cash and chases the claim — recurring, fiddly, working-capital-sensitive admin.

SME bodies have publicly flagged that the mandatory ERIF is “disproportionate” and will impose “excessive administrative burdens.” That complaint is the market: a regulator just mandated paperwork that tiny shops hate and have no tool for.

3. The opportunity

Two converging obligations, one tiny operator caught in the middle. The independent appliance/electronics repair shop — one to three people, a bench, a counter, a van — now has to (a) issue ERIF-compliant quotes that win the consumer comparison the directive forces, and (b) recover repair-fund bonuses it has already fronted. Today they do this in a notebook, a WhatsApp thread, and a shoebox of paper invoices.

The incumbents don’t fit. RepairShopr/Syncro and RepairDesk are built for US cell-phone shops — POS, ticketing, IMEI lookups. Reviews show RepairShopr development “stopped” after Syncro, support “disappears,” POS “appalling.” None of them know what an ERIF is, none integrate Qualirépar reimbursement, none track a statutory parts-access request clock. A focused EU-native tool that turns the repair-fund-and-compliance loop from a 20-minute paper chore into a 2-minute counter action is a wedge a full PMS can’t be bothered to build.

The non-obvious edge: the bonus the repairer fronts is their own money sitting at the eco-organization. A tool that guarantees they recover 100% of it pays for itself in a single missed claim per month.

4. Target market

  • Primary customer: Owner-operator of an independent appliance / small-electronics repair shop in France, Belgium, or Germany — 1–3 staff, €100K–€600K annual turnover, doing 15–80 repairs a week on washing machines, vacuums, coffee machines, phones, TVs. Already Qualirépar-certified (France) or about to register under national transposition (DE/BE).
  • Why they buy: “I front €40 of bonus per repair and then I’m doing invoices at 9pm to get it back. If I forget one, that’s my margin gone.” The new ERIF mandate means a quote that isn’t compliant loses the customer comparison — and a missed reimbursement is a direct cash loss.
  • Rough TAM reasoning: France alone targeted ~7,800 Qualirépar outlets; the EU motor + appliance repair sector spans hundreds of thousands of businesses, ~48% independent. A realistic serviceable beachhead is the ~5,000–8,000 French appliance/electronics repairers, expanding to DE/BE/NL/ES as they transpose. Even 3–5% penetration of France is a real business.
  • Why now for them: 31 July 2026. The directive forces every member state to stand up the ERIF and repair-promotion duties simultaneously. Shops that ignored Bonus Réparation admin can no longer ignore the compliance layer — and the ones already doing it want the cash-recovery automated.

5. Product sketch (MVP)

6. AI angle — what’s load-bearing

AI does the boring extraction and classification that makes the 2-minute promise real. Snap a photo of a paper supplier invoice or the appliance rating plate → it reads brand, model, serial, fault code, parts, and prices, and pre-fills the ERIF and the bonus claim. It classifies each repair into the correct fund category (73 categories in France, with fiddly eligibility rules) and picks the right bonus tier — the single most error-prone step today. It drafts the manufacturer parts-access request and the escalation letter in the right language and legal register. Remove the AI and you’re back to a glorified form-filler the owner won’t bother opening; with it, the counter clerk photographs two things and the compliant paperwork is done.

7. Localization angle

This is a localization play disguised as a compliance play. The ERIF is pan-EU but each member state transposes the directive and runs its own fund mechanics: France’s Qualirépar/ecosystem/Ecologic flow, the per-category bonus tables, the duplicate-invoice reimbursement rule, the national online repair platform format, and the language. A generic global repair-shop tool cannot serve this — the value is knowing that a coffee machine in France gets €X and the claim goes to ecosystem within 15 days. Pricing localizes too: a €39/mo tool clears easily where a $99 US tool would be laughed out of a French bench. First country (France) is fully live today; each new country is a content/integration drop, not a rebuild.

8. Business model — path to $1M–$5M ARR
