2. Trend signal — why now?

Three signals collide:

  1. Bonded contractors hate WIP and are terrible at it. Industry estimate: only ~11.4% of builders know how to compute a WIP schedule properly. Companies running WIP in Excel spend 8–20 hours per month building it. A profit fade of 10%+ triggers a call from the bonding agent — and a bonding capacity cut at renewal. This is monthly pain that directly costs them money.
  2. AI doc extraction matured. Construction invoice/cost extraction is now $2.36/invoice and ~21 seconds (SubBase, Parseur benchmarks 2025–2026). Knowify ($99–300/mo) wraps WIP inside a full PM platform. Nobody is selling a focused, AI-native, self-serve WIP cockpit at $399–799/mo to the contractor who’s too small for fractional CFO and too big for spreadsheets.

3. The opportunity

Two adjacent failures of the current market:

  • Procore + Sage Intacct stack ($10K–$80K/yr + integration tax) is the “right” answer but priced for $20M+ contractors. It also doesn’t truly automate WIP — Procore explicitly cannot produce a WIP schedule, you need Sage on top.
  • Knowify / Siteline are excellent but each owns a different lane: Knowify = job-mgmt PM with WIP module bundled; Siteline = AIA pay-app billing. Neither is the focused, opinionated, surety-first WIP cockpit a bonded sub actually wants.

The wedge is the monthly bonding moment: pull data from QuickBooks/Sage 100 → reclassify costs to jobs/cost-codes with AI → compute % complete (cost-to-cost), earned revenue, over/underbillings, profit fade → emit (a) a clean WIP PDF in the format the surety agent expects, (b) the XBRL submission file when the agent wants that, (c) a profit-fade alert before the agent calls. AI is load-bearing on the messy ingestion side; the math is deterministic.

The 10× edge: instead of CFO + 16 hrs of Excel, the controller hits “generate March WIP,” reviews 6 AI flags (“two costs not assigned to a job,” “Job #218 fade 12%”), exports the PDF, emails it to the agent. 30 minutes, not 16 hours.

4. Target market

  • Primary customer: US specialty trade contractors and small GCs with $1M–$15M annual revenue, bonded, running QuickBooks Online/Desktop or Sage 100 Contractor. Decision-maker is the owner-operator or in-house controller. Buying-influence is the surety bond agent and the outside CPA. Verticals: electrical, mechanical/HVAC, plumbing, concrete, roofing, sitework, low-voltage, masonry — anyone bidding public/commercial work that requires a bond.
  • Why they buy: Their bonding capacity gates how many jobs they can bid. A surety agent asking “where’s your WIP?” is a real, urgent moment. They currently pay either 8–20 hrs/mo of internal labor or a fractional CFO $3K–$8K/mo. A $499/mo product that cuts both costs and produces a cleaner package than the human is an obvious yes.
  • Rough TAM reasoning: US has ~750K specialty trade contractor establishments (BLS NAICS 238). The bonded-and-active subset bidding public/commercial work in the $1M–$15M revenue band is a much smaller slice — directionally ~40K–80K firms. SBA alone backs ~10K bonds/yr. A 1–2% serviceable share at $6K ACV = $5M–$10M ARR. Plenty of room.
  • Why now for them: Surety underwriting tightened post the 2023–2025 contractor-failure cycle. CFMA + AICPA are pushing toward standardized WIP formats (XBRL taxonomy live, “360° WIP” framework). Agents now reject sloppy WIP packages instead of cleaning them up.

6. AI angle — what’s load-bearing

AI does the work the human wastes time on: mapping messy bookkeeping data to clean WIP categories. Construction QB files are notoriously dirty — a single “Home Depot” charge could belong to job 214’s electrical scope, job 217’s punchlist, or office overhead. Today the controller hand-tags this. Tomorrow the model classifies with confidence scores, surfaces only the uncertain rows, and learns the contractor’s vocabulary. Strip out the AI and you’re back to a rules-based reclassifier the controller has to maintain forever — a dead product. The compute math (% complete, earned revenue, fade) is deterministic and that’s a feature — sureties don’t want LLM-generated numbers, they want auditable arithmetic on top of correctly-classified inputs.

7. Localization angle (if any)

N/A — this is a US-first play. WIP, surety bonding, and the percentage-of-completion convention are deeply US-construction-specific (and to a lesser extent UK/Australia/Canada).
